Camas National Wildlife Refuge, Hamer
Camas National Wildlife Refuge is home to hundreds of native and migratory species of birds and mammals. The refuge provides excellent opportunities to view and photograph wildlife throughout the year. If you drive on the refuge roads, chances are good that you will see a rich diversity of animal life.

Market Lake Wildlife Management Area, Roberts
Market Lake WMA supports a diverse array of wildlife species. WMA staff recently recorded 19,000 visitors per year on the WMA for hunting, wildlife watching, tour groups and other recreation. Waterfowl hunters use the WMA every day during the waterfowl season until the marshes freeze up. A wildlife viewing blind is popular with wildlife watchers, who make up the largest group of visitors to enjoy the trails and waterways of the WMA.

Snake River Boating Guide
Throughout the South Fork of the Snake River corridor there are many places to launch both motorized and non-motorized boats. Major public sites are listed with river mile and facilities, including four in Jefferson County: Heise Bridge, Lorenzo, Menan, and Mike Walker.

North Menan Butte Trail
The twin Menan Buttes are two of the world’s largest tuff cones - volcanoes that form when basaltic magma boils up through ground water. These extinct volcanoes were formed by violent eruptions 10,000 years ago. The trail to the summit of the North Butte offers exceptional opportunities to explore the unique geology and natural history of this area.

Wolf Flats Recreation Area
Wolf Flats is a dispersed, undeveloped camping area with 25 locations to camp. Some large areas are can accommodate groups of 50 people. There is an adjacent undeveloped boat access to the South Fork of the Snake River. Although technically outside of Jefferson County, this site provides a good overview of activities available in the Heise/Kelly Canyon area.

Mud Lake Wildlife Management Area
Mud Lake WMA consists of 11,468 acres and surrounds Mud Lake, a 4,500 acre lake found in Jefferson County. Two deep marsh units and numerous shallow flooded wetlands contain vital stopover habitat and nesting habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. An important waterfowl nesting area of the WMA is closed to all watercraft from April 1 – July 15. A wildlife security area is limited to non-motorized travel, does not allow hunting and all dogs must be on a leash in this area.
